52 Brave: Helping families facing illness and loss tell their story
When my son was sick and we were told our days with him were numbered, I did everything I could to document those precious moments because I knew I would want a way to remember every little detail of him. Even though we were living in the hospital at the time- surrounded by nurses and medical equipment and high potency drugs - there was so much beauty in this time and in this space. Every belly laugh felt like a small miracle. The way Søren would wrap his hands and legs around me as he slept. The way his hair was growing back after chemo. I didn’t want to forget any of it.
Now I help other families preserve these precious moments and memories so they have a way to revisit and relive their love for their family.
52 Brave was created as a part of Fifty Two Hundred Photo, dedicated to helping families facing illness and loss tell their story and preserve their stories and memories.
It’s been an honor over the last few years to Partner with Transitions Life Care and Duke University Hospital to offer the families they work with hospice photography sessions. I do this on a volunteer basis and it brings me a lot of joy to be able to offer this to families who are experiencing very difficult situations.
I’ve seen first hand just how precious every photograph becomes after someone has passed. While we don’t often show the more difficult parts of life - such as illness and death- there is still so much beauty in this part of life too.
These are all images from dear families I’ve created with (with permission to share).
