How to prepare for your Newborn Portrait Session

First, when do you recommend we schedule our newborn session?

I recommend within the first 4 weeks. Once you’re home and settling in, I recommend that you connect with me so we can find a time for me to come within the first month. Those early days fly by - with the newness of it all, the sleep deprivation, all the love. Years from now, you’ll be so glad you had these early days captured and documented

Setting the intention: My goal is to create a space for your to slow down and soak it all in.

How to prepare

Prior to your session:

  1. I'm often asked about attire for newborns- my recommendation is to keep it simple. A simple onesie, a beautiful swaddle. Consider purchasing bloomers or a diaper cover. We don't want the clothing to distract from your sweet baby.

  2. For parent's clothing: the color of your clothing will be reflected onto your baby's skin- so I recommend avoiding bright red/pinks. One parent in white or cream is nice! Sweaters with texture will photograph really well.

On the day of your session:

  1. Please have all artificial lights off and all the blinds/shades up before I arrive

  2. Turn the heat up a bit, so your baby is comfortable when we remove the swaddle or onesie

  3. We'll follow your baby's lead. If they need to eat or nurse, we'll document that. We'll go slow and capture it all.

“It's been almost 7 weeks since Graham arrived and I don't think I had yet really slowed down and just take him all in, until you were here on Sunday. That was really therapeutic and important for me.

Thank you for helping me do that.

It's so easy to get stressed, and I really needed that slow focus even if just for a few hours. But now I'm doing more of it (I've literally been pretending you are here again).

You're magic."

I highly recommended adding on a Newborn Film to your Newborn portrait session.
